Flash Mobs and Fitness: Susie Vanderlip's Second Act

Susie Vanderlip is a dedicated Zumba Gold instructor who has transformed her passion for dance into a dynamic and joyful movement for seniors. Susie's journey from dance performance to leading the Seniors Over 60 Dance Crew (SOS) is nothing short of magical.

The Birth of the SOS Dance Crew

Susie Vanderlip's journey began over a decade ago when she became a Zumba Gold instructor at 24 Hour Fitness. With a rich background in dance and performance spanning over 50 years, Susie couldn't contain her excitement about her students' progress in learning complex choreography. Inspired by their dedication, she decided that their talents needed to be shared beyond the walls of the gym. The idea to create the SOS Dance Crew struck her when she envisioned performing "That's the Way I Like It" at a Starbucks. She approached the store manager, got approval, and the performance was a hit. This was the inception of the Seniors Over 60 Dance Crew, a group that brought joy, connection, and physical activity into everyday public spaces.

Taking the Show on the Road

From Starbucks to Albertsons grocery stores, and even the Aquarium of the Pacific, the SOS Dance Crew has been spreading their infectious energy and inspiring people of all ages. These spontaneous flash mobs have become an annual tradition for the past nine years, showcasing that age is no barrier to movement and joy. Susie's team has grown to include performances at senior living facilities, touching the hearts of many by promoting an active, vibrant lifestyle through dance.

The Vital Role of Movement

Susie's story isn't just about dance; it's about the fundamental importance of movement for seniors. Inspired by her own mother's journey to regain mobility and vitality through daily exercises, Susie decided to share her knowledge in a comprehensive and accessible way. Her book, "Balance for Seniors: Understand Aging and Exercises for Core, Flexibility, and Stability," encapsulates decades of her experience and wisdom.

A Lifelong Passion for Dance and Teaching

Susie's story is rooted in a lifelong passion for dance that began in college and evolved through numerous performances and teaching roles. Despite personal challenges, including the loss of her husband to addiction, Susie found solace and purpose in dance. Her journey through the world of alcohol and drug prevention led her to cherish movement as a tool for healing and self-discovery.

Promoting Holistic Well-Being

For Susie, aging well isn’t just about physical activity; it’s about integrating body, mind, and spirit. She emphasizes the importance of internal awareness and self-care, urging her students to treat their bodies with compassion and kindness. Through yoga, Zumba, and a unique class focused on body awareness and core strength, Susie addresses the holistic needs of her students.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Instructors

Susie believes that becoming a fitness instructor for seniors is accessible to anyone with a heart for teaching and encouraging others. She offers practical advice on obtaining certifications and training through reputable organizations like Zumba and AFAA. It’s about fostering competence and confidence in delivering quality instruction.

Fostering a Supportive Community Through her classes, Susie has cultivated a supportive and social community. Her students are not just participants; they are friends who uplift each other. This sense of camaraderie is crucial for combating loneliness and promoting overall well-being among seniors.

Susie Vanderlip’s story and the SOS Dance Crew exemplify how passion, creativity, and dedication can transform lives. Her work highlights the profound impact of physical activity and social connection on the well-being of seniors.
